Auto-Tune settings for rap and singing

"Auto-Tune" is Antares' brand name, but people use it for any real-time pitch correction: Waves Tune Real-Time, Logic's Pitch Correction, Ableton's Auto Shift, FL Studio's Pitcher and others. The controls have different names, but they do the same few things. Get these right and the tuner sounds intentional; get them wrong and it sounds broken.

Short answer
  • The key and scale matter more than any other setting
  • Fast retune speed = hard, robotic trap sound; slower = natural
  • Humanize lets long notes keep their natural movement
  • Put the tuner first in the chain, before compression and effects
  • Monitor through it while recording if you perform to the effect

1. Key and scale

The tuner snaps each note to the nearest note in the scale you set. Wrong key, and it pulls good notes to wrong ones, which is the warbly, out-of-tune sound people blame on Auto-Tune. Find the song's key (ask the producer, check the beat's file name, or use a key-detection tool), then set the key and scale (major or minor) in the tuner.

2. Retune speed

How fast the tuner pulls a note to pitch. This one control decides the whole character:

Retune speedSoundUse for
Fastest (0 or near 0)Hard, stepped, roboticTrap and melodic rap where the effect is the sound
FastClearly tuned but smootherModern pop and R&B
Medium to slowMostly natural, gentle correctionSinging where you don't want to hear the tuner

Each plugin uses its own scale for this control, so set it by ear: start fast and slow it down until the effect is where you want it.

3. Humanize and natural vibrato

Hard retune on long notes flattens them into a synth-like line. Humanize (or a similar control) applies slower correction to sustained notes, so they keep natural movement while short notes still snap. Vibrato controls let you keep, reduce or add vibrato.

4. Voice type and formant

Many tuners ask for an input type (soprano, alto/tenor, low male). Picking the right range improves tracking and reduces glitches. Formant controls keep the voice's character natural when pitch moves a lot.

Where does Auto-Tune go in the vocal chain?

First, or right after a high-pass filter. The tuner needs the dry, clean voice to detect pitch. Reverb, delay, doublers or heavy distortion in front of it make it track the effect instead of the note. In the Ultimate Vocal Chain, 23 of 26 chains start with Waves Tune Real-Time for exactly this reason. Full order: vocal chain order explained.

Tips for a clean tuned vocal

  • Sing close to the notes. Tuners correct, they don't invent. Far-off notes jump to the wrong pitch.
  • Monitor through it while recording if you perform to the effect, which is how most melodic rap is recorded.
  • Different settings for adlibs: harder or softer than the lead keeps them distinct. See how to mix adlibs.
  • Fix big problems manually with graphical editors (Melodyne, Flex Pitch) before or instead of real-time correction.

FAQ

What's the best Auto-Tune setting for rap?

The right key and scale with a fast retune speed for the hard effect, or a slightly slower speed and some humanize for melodic rap that still sounds human.

Why does my Auto-Tune sound bad?

Most often the key or scale is wrong. Then check retune speed, input type, and that nothing like reverb or a doubler sits before the tuner.

Can I use Auto-Tune on a deep voice?

Yes. Set the input type to a low voice range so tracking is accurate.
