FL Studio is one of the most popular DAWs for rap and trap, and it's fully capable of a finished vocal mix. The catch for beginners is the routing: vocals only get processed properly once they live on their own Mixer insert. This guide covers the setup, a vocal chain built from stock plugins, and how to handle doubles, adlibs and effects.
- Give every vocal its own Mixer insert (F9 opens the Mixer)
- Chain on the insert: pitch → EQ cuts → compression → de-ess → tone
- Put delay and reverb on separate inserts and use sends
- Route all vocal inserts to one vocal bus for glue and level
- Check the mix in mono and on a phone before exporting
1. Record or import the vocal onto its own insert
- Open the Mixer (F9) and pick an empty insert. Name it (for example "Lead") and give it a colour.
- To record, choose your interface input in the insert's input menu, arm the insert, then record into the Playlist.
- If the vocal is already recorded, drag the audio file into the Playlist. In the Channel Rack, set that audio clip's Mixer track number to your vocal insert. Until you do this, the vocal plays through the Master with no processing.
Repeat for each part: Lead, Doubles, Adlibs. Separate inserts mean separate chains, which is the whole point.
2. Clean up the audio
Cut silence and noise between phrases in the Playlist, lower harsh breaths, and fix big level jumps by adjusting clip volume. For constant background hiss, Edison has noise-removal tools. Aim for peaks around −10 to −6 dBFS before any plugin.
3. Build the vocal chain on the insert
FL Studio processes the effect slots from top to bottom, so the slot order is your chain order. Why this order works: vocal chain order explained.
| Slot | Job | Stock option |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pitch correction | Pitcher or NewTone, depending on your edition |
| 2 | High-pass + corrective EQ | Fruity Parametric EQ 2 |
| 3 | Compression (peaks) | Fruity Limiter in compressor mode, or Fruity Compressor |
| 4 | Compression (levelling) | A second, gentler compressor |
| 5 | De-essing / harsh bands | Maximus (in editions that include it) or a de-esser plugin |
| 6 | Tone and air | Fruity Parametric EQ 2 (broad boosts) and light saturation |
Settings to start from are in the vocal EQ cheat sheet and vocal compression settings.
4. Delay and reverb on sends
- Create two new inserts: "Delay" and "Reverb". Put Fruity Delay 3 on one and Fruity Reeverb 2 on the other, both 100% wet.
- Select your vocal insert, then click the small arrow at the bottom of the Delay insert. That adds a send (with a knob) while the vocal keeps going to its normal output. Don't choose "Route to this track only".
- Turn the send knob up until the effect is just audible. Do the same for reverb.
Sends let the lead, doubles and adlibs share the same space, and you can automate a send for delay throws on the last word of a bar. For rap, keep reverb low and lean on delay; details in how to mix rap vocals.
5. Doubles, adlibs and the vocal bus
- Doubles: 6–10 dB below the lead, panned left/right, with a bit more low and high cut.
- Adlibs: their own insert with a different sound: filter, panning, more delay. See how to mix adlibs.
- Vocal bus: route the Lead, Doubles and Adlibs inserts to one "Vocals" insert (and from there to the Master). A light compressor on it, 1–2 dB, glues the parts together and gives you one fader for the whole vocal.
6. Using a vocal chain preset in FL Studio
You can save any finished insert chain as a Mixer state and reuse it. Third-party chains work too: for Waves chains, insert StudioVerse Audio Effects in one slot of the vocal insert and load the .xps preset. The whole chain runs in that one slot. Setup details: StudioVerse and StudioRack explained.
7. Final checks
- Check in mono (the Master's stereo separation control or a mono plugin on the Master).
- Listen on a phone and earbuds.
- Compare with a reference track at matched loudness.
FAQ
Why does my vocal have no effects in FL Studio?
It's probably still routed to the Master. Set the audio clip's Mixer track number to the insert that holds your effects.
Can you mix vocals in FL Studio with stock plugins only?
Yes. EQ, compression, delay and reverb are all included. Third-party plugins change the character, not whether it's possible.
What's the best vocal chain for FL Studio?
The one in the order above, adjusted to your voice. The plugins matter less than the order, the levels and how much you do with each.
Should I put effects on the Master to make vocals sound better?
No. Process vocals on their own inserts. Master effects change the whole song, beat included.
